Rio Limones couldn’t contain the sudden influx of water from Hurricane Karl’s heavy rains. The river spilled its banks, sending a wall of water through the village of Espinal de Santa Barbara.

The 105 families in the small Mexican village suddenly were in grave peril. The water came so fast that they barely had time to get out of their houses. Most ran to the nearby hills. Some people climbed trees to survive. Many houses along the river were washed away completely.

The Samaritan’s Purse team delivering emergency relief supplies came upon the community on Friday.

“Because of the distance from Veracruz, this community was out of the public eye and very little help from the government was getting to them,” said Daniel Lind, director of our office in Mexico.

Along with our church partners, we were able to help the people of Espinal de Santa Barbara with water, food and hygiene kits, and clothing items.
