Sowing Seeds of Hope
Samaritan’s Purse provides clean water and agricultural training to rural Cambodian villages
Kong Korn sat down to wait for her turn to draw water. She had made the long walk several times that day, and the few moments of rest were a relief. Korn watched as each woman filled buckets or jerry cans and then carried the heavy containers home.
Korn knew the vitality of her garden depended on a steady water supply during the dry season. And so she walked the path frequently.
Then Samaritan’s Purse dug a well near Korn’s home, supplying a constant supply of fresh water to keep her garden growing as well as plenty to drink.
“I believe that from now on my family won’t have problems with water as before,” she said, “and other families will benefit from this well and will have enough water to drink.”
Our staff also taught Korn and her neighbors improved agricultural practices to help them yield a better harvest.
Nearly 80 percent of Cambodia’s population lives in rural communities, where growing enough food is an ongoing struggle. To help, Samaritan’s Purse began a project called Seeds of Hope. We are working through churches to develop sustainable programs and teach communities about improved agricultural farming methods.
Since the program began in the Takeo Province in 2006, Samaritan’s Purse has helped families build 315 F.A.I.T.H (Food Always In The House) gardens and 241 fishponds. Many wells have been dug, and cows and chickens have been distributed through local churches to assist struggling families.
A recent external evaluation found that the program has helped improve the moral status of villages. Alcoholism and domestic violence are decreasing, and churches are growing.
“The community started to hear that people who believe in Christ have good relationships with others and are very humble,” said Pastor Tou Sitho, who has seen 35 people make decisions for Christ since the program began. “Compared with before, the people are now very open to the Gospel.”
WAYS YOU CAN HELP
PRAY:
• That the Lord would continue to provide opportunities for pastors and Samaritan’s Purse staff to share the Gospel with residents of the Takeo Province.
• That the Seeds of Hope project would break the cycle of poverty for many families.
• That God would continue to heal the nation of Cambodia as they recover from the brutality of the Khmer Rouge.
