Tansen Mission Hospital - Nepal — Tansen Mission Hosptial is located in the Palpa district, a ten-hour drive west from Kathmandu, the Tansen Mission Hospital serves as a zonal hospital for the region and has a catchment area of almost a million, extending into India. It has a rich heritage, being one of the first clinics to be opened in Nepal in the early 1950's and consequently has a very good reputation with the Nepali people. The facility officially has 140 beds but often will have more than 150 inpatients. The services offered include surgery, pediatrics, general medicine, obstetrics, gynecology and dentistry. Recently, a five-bed burn unit was opened to care for the many severely burned patients that come to the facility. The hospital is considered very family friendly.

Soddo Christian Hospital - Ethiopia — Soddo Christian Hospital is a 120 bed facility located in a mountainous region with beautiful weather and moderate temperatures. There are five wards (2) surgical, (1) maternity, (1) small ICU and (1) general. Current long term expatriate staff include (3) general surgeons, (1) orthopedic surgeon, (2) OBGs, (2) Pediatricians, (1) Anesthesiologist and (1) internist.
Soddo has (5) OR tables which are well equipped with nails and plates for orthopedic surgeries. Surgeries are scheduled each weekday and emergency surgeries are performed as needed.
The orthopedic needs at Soddo are increasing. Orthopedic surgeons who can commit to a minimum of two weeks of volunteer service are encouraged to apply. Mukinge Hospital - Zambia — Mukinge Hospital is a 200-bed referral facility that currently services 100,000 people in the Kasempa and Mufumbwe districts in the Northwestern Province. The hospital has seven inpatient wards, including general medical/surgical (male and female), maternity (1,300 – 1,400 deliveries per year), pediatrics (acute ward and malnutrition ward), TB and eye. There is a busy outpatient department with 160 – 180 patients seen daily. The outpatient department includes general care clinics, as well as clinics for well child care, antenatal care, family planning, tuberculosis, nutrition, surgery, ophthalmology, ART and STD's. There is a physical therapy department offering whirlpool, plaster casting, rehabilitation, prosthesis and leprosy follow-up. There is a pharmacy with basic drug supplies. Community services include family planning, antenatal care, well child care, leprosy, nutrition, ophthalmology care, and HIV/AIDS. The hospital has a full-time community-based AIDS team as well as a mobile and in-house eye program. There are (2) operating rooms equipped with a reasonable range of instruments for general, orthopedic and eye surgery. Hospital staff include (2) Zambian general practice physicians and one expatriate general surgeon.

Surgery: There are (2) operating rooms equipped with a reasonable range of instruments for general, orthopedic, and eye surgery (including an operating microscope). Equipment and supplies include an autoclave, endotracheal tubes, suction and cautery.
Anesthesia: General anesthesia. Equipment includes an autoclave, endotracheal tubes, suction, cautery, stationary and portable x-ray, and basic ultrasound. They have a Glostavent which will draw over gas anesthesia with either isofluorane or halothane.
The anesthesia needs at Mukinge are currently being met by (2) CRNAs. One of them will be going on furlough from July - December 2012 leaving (1) CRNA to cover all the anesthesia needs as well as be on call 24/7. Mukinge will accept volunteers for a minimum three week commitment.

There is an Internal Medicine Specialization Residency program and an OBG residency program will be launched in 2011. There is a three year training program for nurses and nurse anesthetists. Lab tests: Comparable US range of lab tests available.
Common diseases/trauma: Over 50% of adult inpatients have HIV/AIDS. Opportunistic infections, especially TB are common. Mbingo Baptist Hospital - Cameroon — Mbingo Baptist Hospital is a 270 bed facility located in the Northwest Province of Cameroon. Long term expatriate staff include (2) general surgeons, (3) internists, (1) internist/pathologist, (4) pediatricians and (1) OBG. There is need for interpretation of fine needle aspiration specimens, body fluid cytology, grossing of general surgical specimens and interpretation of H&E stained sections. Currently, the only special stains available are AFB and Gram stain. Reports can be dictated using Dragon Naturally software that is in place. A digital camera is attached to the microscope so that consultation can be obtained if desired using e-mailed images. There is opportunity for the volunteer pathologist to perform the fine needle aspirations or these can be done by residents who have been instructed in the technique if he/she prefers. Finally, didactic lectures given 3 days a week by long-term and short-term personnel are provided for the residents. Contributing 1-2 lectures per week on any subject pertinent to general or tropical medicine, though not required, is very helpful in reducing the work load of the long-term personnel. Volunteers interested in formal teaching should be in direct contact with hospital field staff prior to departure to prepare for their teaching role.
All volunteers are self-funded. World Medical Mission will assist with booking flights, obtaining visas, licensing and in-country travel arrangements.
The long term pathologist at Mbingo will be away from the hospital on a short furlough from approximately August 4 - September 9, 2012, thus coverage is needed in his absence. Karolyn Kempton Memorial Christian Hospital - Togo — Hopital Baptiste Biblique (HBB) or Karolyn Kempton Memorial Christian Hospital (KKMCH) is a 40-bed hospital which opened in 1985. There are 8 to 10 bed male and female wards, an 8 to 10 pediatric ward, a 4 bed ICU, an infection ward and an 8-10 bed maternity with a four bed delivery area. There are a few isolation and private rooms, a triage area and a busy outpatient clinic with an average of 20,000 outpatient clinic visits per year. KKMCH is in southwest Togo, just north of Kpalimé. The hospital is located on 32 beautiful acres at the foot of the Danyi Plateau between two large urban areas. Lush and green, the site abounds with trees, flowers, and vegetation. It is a major medical, surgical, and acute-care facility that serves approximately half a million people. The bulk of the patients are Togolese, but many come from neighboring Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Benin. Hospital staff includes (1) US boarded American family practice physician, (1) US boarded American pediatrician, (1) American surgical PA, and (2) Togolese PA anesthetists equivalent of CRNAs as well as 3 Togolese medical PAs, missionary trained nurses, and other support staff. There is also an American physician assistant serving at HBB from 2010 – 2012. KKMCH averages 700 deliveries per year with about 50% of those being c-sections. There are weekly evangelistic mobile medical clinics and an active community health evangelism program. The hospital also conducts immunization and pre-natal clinics.
Climate: The weather in Adéta is generally hot and humid. Average high temperatures range from the upper 80s to the upper 90s. There are two rainy seasons, one from late March through July, and the second from September through November. In December and January, the Harmattan winds blow down from the Sahara, causing a constant dusty haze.
Language: Although there are 44 tribal languages in Togo, the two national languages are Ewe and Kabyé, with French being the official national language used throughout the country. Virtually all official business and teaching is conducted in French.
Charting: Doctor’s orders are generally written in English. Nursing charting in French and English. Most staff speak English. Translators available for patient interaction.
Surgery: There are (2) operating rooms equipped with basic OR equipment and supplies to perform a broad range of surgeries. There is an equipment sterilizer machine. No laparoscopy or fluoroscopy. No ventilators except for generals for surgery. Limited orthopedic capacity. There is a hip fracture table. There are (2) endoscopes. Surgeries are performed every weekday except Wednesday and emergency cases 24/7. Average of 4 surgeries performed per day.
Anesthesia: Local, spinal, ketamine and general (limited). Wall mounted oxygen.
Radiology/Ultrasound: Basic x-ray. Mobile ultrasound machine. No CAT scan.

This family practice clinic was founded in 1980 and treats about 1000 patients each month. Egbe Hospital - Nigeria — Egbe Hospital is located in Egbe, Kogi State, Nigeria. Founded in 1952 by SIM missionaries, ECWA Hospital Egbe is a 121 bed rural teaching hospital serving a large population in Kogi State. The hospital covers 33 acres with 68 buildings. The hospital is not currently at full capacity. There is a ten bed men’s and a ten bed female surgical wards, five bed men’s and women’s medical wards, a five bed pediatrics ward, a five bed maternity ward, and a four bed HIV ward. Departments include surgical, outpatient, maternity, eye center, radiology and pharmacy. There is also a school of nursing, a school of midwifery and a HIV/AIDS counseling clinic. The hospital is staffed by 69 Nigerians with (5) family practice physicians. There is (1) American family practice physician. A strong Christian emphasis, including evangelism and Biblical teaching has been maintained from the outset and is currently administered by three trained pastors. Community health outreach is not highly developed.
Climate: Nigeria is located just north of the equator and enjoys a tropical climate. November through March is the dry season with daytime temperatures that can exceed 100 degrees. The hottest and most humid months are February and March. December is the coolest month with dry, dusty winds called harmattan. April through October is the rainy season with temperatures between 75 and 95 degrees.
Language: English and Yoruba. All hospital staff speak English and about 50% of the patients speak English. Translators are available for patient interaction.
Charting: English
Surgery: There are (3) operating rooms one of which is a minor room. No fluoroscopy or laparoscopic capability. Portable x-ray is available in the operating room. Well equipped for basic general and orthopedic surgery. Approximately 300 major operations are performed each year. Surgeries average one per day by visiting general and orthopedic surgeons. There is no long term general surgeon currently on staff.
Orthopedics: General orthopedic equipment. Most of the orthopedic surgery is for trauma. There is a Nigerian orthopedic surgeon who visits once per month.
Anesthesia: Draw over equipment is used at present with oxygen concentrator. Draw over does not require pressurized oxygen. Types of anesthesia include spinal, Ketamine, and GA w/ LMA or intubation/paralysis as needed. Isoflurane and Halothane are the inhalation agents. New anesthesia machines using pressurized oxygen should be in use by 2012.
Radiology: (1) fixed x-ray machine, (1) portable x-ray and (1) ultrasound machine. The ultrasound machine is in maternity. Echocardiography is available. X-ray technicians are in charge of the x-ray unit.
Pathology: No lab on-site. All tissue specimens are sent to a facility 80 miles away.
Egbe will accept volunteers for a minimum two week commitment. Teaching will be the primary role of short term volunteers. Volunteers are responsible for all costs associated with the trip. de Meskine Hospital - Cameroon — de Meskine is a 100 bed hospital located in a remote area of Cameroon. This is a challenging mission location with few expatriates. The hospital provides surgery, maternity services and general medicine along with treatment in the outpatient clinic. French is the primary language along with the local Fulfulde dialect. Few patients or staff speak English. Over 90% of the population is Muslim.
The long term general surgeon will be leaving de Meskine in June 2012 at which time the hospital will be without surgical coverage. Any general surgeon volunteering short term at de Meskine will be the only expatriate physician in the hospital and thus must be comfortable working exclusively with national staff.
The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission will provide assistance in arranging all travel and other logistical elements of the trip including visas and any necessary medical licensing.
It is preferred that volunteers be fluent in French but an interpreter can be arranged. de Meskine will accept volunteers for a minimum three week commitment.

Ophthalmologist
Bongolo Hospital - Gabon — Bongolo Hospital is a 158 bed hospital located in Labemba, Gabon. Bongolo is family friendly with a mix of national and expatriate staff. There are (2) operating tables with Zeiss operating microscopes in (1) large operating room thus permitting (2) procedures to be performed simultaneously. The OR is tiled and air conditioned. There is a clinic area for consultations that is also air conditioned and has 4 slit lamps, applanation tonometry and indirect ophthalmoscopy. There is a functioning Diplomax phacoemulsification machine with anterior vitrectomy capability, though usually MSICS is the preferred technique. After devotions at 7:30 am, there are grand rounds M-F. The workday typically ends at 5:00 pm with an hour lunch break. Mondays and Fridays are clinic visits only. Tuesday through Thursday is a combination of clinic and surgery. Surgeries average anywhere from 4 – 8 per day. Surgeries are currently being scheduled nine months out. There is a morning session on Wednesday for the eye clinic for an hour of teaching related to ophthalmology. There are 4 Gabonese nurses and (1) Gabonese nurse’s aide. All speak primarily French but understand some English. An optical shop with own edger will be operational soon. It is important that short term volunteers feel comfortable doing extracapsular or MSICS cataract surgery. Bongolo has instituted a three year training program in ophthalmology (currently have one 3rd year Congolese resident) and thus welcomes the help of short term ophthalmologists with a passion for teaching.
The long term expatriate ophthalmologist at Bongolo will be in the United States from approximately June 6 - September 21, 2012.
It is preferred that short term volunteers have at least 19 days, including travel, available for service. Fluency in French is preferred but there are translators available. General Surgeon
Baptist Medical Centre - Ghana — Profile: Baptist Medical Centre is located in the town of Nalerigu in rural northwest Ghana. There are approximately 10 hospital buildings and seven medical wards including medical, OB/GYN, surgical, ICU, pediatric, isolation and TB. It is a 137 bed facility, (50) pediatric, (21) surgical, (23) medical, (14) isolation, (11) adolescent, (8) maternity, (5) HIV/TB and (5) staff/special care. There is currently no ER, but the hospital is open 24 hours a day to receive emergency cases. Approximately 400 patients are seen each clinic day (MWF). There is also a mobile dental clinic, staffed by Ghanaians doing primarily extractions and cleanings three days per week and administrative work two days per week. Expatriate staff consists of a US boarded FP physician and (1) US boarded OBG. The CRNA is Ghanaian.
Travel/Orientation: Fly into the capital city of Accra. The following morning fly to city of Tamale and then driven two hours to town of Nalerigu. Orientation includes staff introductions, a hospital tour and a copy of the formulary.
Climate: The rainy season is April through August. The harmattan, a dry desert wind blows from December through February. The average annual temperature is 79 degrees.
Language: While English is the official national language, the major people group around the hospital is Mamprusi, whose language is Mampruli.
Charting: English. Translators are available for patient interaction.
Surgery: There are (2) major operating rooms and (2) minor operating rooms. On MWF (clinic days), minor operations are performed on those admitted. Elective surgeries are performed on TTH and emergency surgeries as needed 24/7. On average 1,200 major surgeries and 2,500 to 3,000 minor surgeries are performed each year. There is no portable x-ray available in the operating room.
Anesthesia: Spinal, Ketamine, propofol and local (lidocaine, marciane, etc). The only anesthesia machine is an old EMO machine. There is monitoring equipment.
Radiology/Ultrasound: Basic X-ray. X-ray technicians take the x-rays. Physicians read the results. Ultrasound machine with linear array, phased-array and vaginal probes. No CT and no MRI capability.
Pathology: No lab on site.
Common diseases: TB, snake bite, malaria, typhoid, arthritis and hypertension.
Baptist Medical Centre is currently without a long term general surgeon and are thus relying on short term volunteer general surgeons to meet their surgical needs. Baptist Medical Centre will accept volunteers for minimum two week commitment. All volunteers are self-funded.
