She\r\n                                                                currently serves at Hospital of Hope in Togo through the\r\n                                                                Post-Residency Program. A girl\r\n                                                                        with a snakebite,\u201d announced the night duty\r\n                                                                        nurse.\r\n                                                                        By this point, snakebites felt almost like\r\n                                                                        cruise\r\n                                                                        control. We\r\n                                                                        had gone through a period where we would see, on\r\n                                                                        average, two\r\n                                                                        snakebite patients per shift. You order a clot\r\n                                                                        time,\r\n                                                                        give\r\n                                                                        antivenom if the clot time is abnormal, then\r\n                                                                        repeat\r\n                                                                        six\r\n                                                                        hours\r\n                                                                        later until the clot time is normal and stable.\r\n                                                                    <\/p>\r\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n                                                            <\/div>\r\n                                                            <!---- Snake Logo SVG Paragraph (End) ---->\r\n\r\n                                                            <p>Occasionally, the patient or family would add a little\r\n                                                                extra flair to the visit by actually bringing in the\r\n                                                                dead snake. On a few occasions, they dumped the dead\r\n                                                                snake on the floor at my feet. My response was a small\r\n                                                                yelp, a jump backward, and then running behind the\r\n                                                                counter to put a barrier between myself and the snake,\r\n                                                                while asking the patient\u2019s family to please get rid of\r\n                                                                the snake. They laugh.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                            <p>But this girl was different. She was asleep outside (it\r\n                                                                was hot season, and often cooler at night outdoors than\r\n                                                                indoors) and was bitten on her face. Her upper lip had\r\n                                                                swollen to about four times the size of normal and had a\r\n                                                                slow trickle of blood dripping from the bite site.\r\n                                                                Without waiting for the clot time result, she received\r\n                                                                four vials of antivenom.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                            <!---- Quote Container (Start) ---->\r\n                                                            <div class=\"quote-container\">\r\n                                                                <div class=\"quote\">\r\n                                                                    <p>Within three hours, her entire face had blown up\r\n                                                                        to\r\n                                                                        unrecognizable, and the swelling was threatening\r\n                                                                        her&nbsp;airway.<\/p>\r\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n                                                            <\/div>\r\n                                                            <!---- Quote Container (End) ---->\r\n\r\n                                                            <!---- Info Graphic (Start) ---->\r\n                                                            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.theark.cloud\/sp-comm-arkfiles\/website\/landing-pages\/on-call-webpage\/img\/snakebite-graphic.jpg\"\r\n                                                                class=\"info-graphic\">\r\n                                                            <!---- Info Graphic (End) ---->\r\n\r\n                                                            <p>I consulted with a friend who advised me to also give the\r\n                                                                youth dexamethasone and Vitamin K. Nevertheless, the\r\n                                                                swelling continued. Within three hours, her entire face\r\n                                                                had blown up to unrecognizable, and the swelling was\r\n                                                                threatening her airway. At this point she was so swollen\r\n                                                                that she could not open her eyes or close her mouth.\r\n                                                                Blood-stained drool poured from the corners of her lips.\r\n                                                                Thankfully she never needed it, but I asked the surgeons\r\n                                                                to bring an emergency airway kit to leave at her bedside\r\n                                                                in case things continued to worsen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                            <p>While most snakebite patients are usually in a general\r\n                                                                medical bed for one to two days, she stayed multiple\r\n                                                                days in our ICU and then several more in a general\r\n                                                                medical ward. One of the highlights\r\n                                                                                    of Smith\u2019s first year in Togo was\r\n                                                                                    attending a baptism ceremony for\r\n                                                                                    four new believers.<\/p>\r\n                                                                            <\/div>\r\n                                                                        <\/div>\r\n                                                                    <\/div>\r\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n                                                            <\/div>\r\n                                                            <!---- Gallary Flexbox with Text Box (End) ---->\r\n\r\n                                                            <p>There have been several more\r\n                                                                scenarios since I started working\r\n                                                                here that have allowed me to\r\n                                                                practice this fervent prayer without\r\n                                                                ceasing. And although I would rather\r\n                                                                not be in such stressful situations,\r\n                                                                I am thankful for the frequent\r\n                                                                reminder of my dependence on the\r\n                                                                Lord and for His good promise to be\r\n                                                                always with me. I am thankful that\r\n                                                                even when things seem out of my\r\n                                                                control, I can trust that the Lord\r\n                                                                is ultimately in control.<\/p>\r\n                                                            <p>We also give thanks that we witnessed\r\n                                                                our first baptisms since our arrival\r\n                                                                in January 2021. We celebrated with\r\n                                                                a Togolese brother who made his\r\n                                                                faith public, along with two\r\n                                                                children from a missionary family on\r\n                                                                our team, and an adult child who\r\n                                                                came to visit her parents (our team\r\n                                                                leaders).
