Clough arrived at the hospital in June&nbsp;2023.<\/small><\/li>\r\n                                                    <\/ul> -->\r\n\r\n\r\n                                                    <aside class=\"sticky-sidebar\">\r\n                                                        <div class=\"card space-small\">\r\n                                                            <article>\r\n                                                                <h3 class=\"h6\">World Medical Mission <span>Sirve con nosotros<\/span><\/h3>\r\n                                                                <footer>\r\n                                                                    <a class=\"primary button\" href=\"https:\/\/samaritanspurse.org\/es\/medical\/world-medical-mission\/#serve\">Solicita ahora<\/a>\r\n                                                                <\/footer>\r\n                                                            <\/article>\r\n                                                        <\/div>\r\n                                                    <\/aside>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Don't ask Dr. Sam and Liz Williams\r\n                                                        about their golf handicaps or clever\r\n                                                        shuffleboard strategies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cBoring!\u201d protests Liz.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cActually, we've never done those things,\u201d\r\n                                                        admits Sam.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Not that there is anything wrong with\r\n                                                        those pursuits, but for most of their married\r\n                                                        lives the Williamses have not slowed down\r\n                                                        long enough to play a round of golf or match\r\n                                                        wits on a shuffleboard court.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Since 1990, the couple has globe-trotted\r\n                                                        with World Medical Mission from their home\r\n                                                        in Virginia to countries like Kenya, Ecuador,\r\n                                                        Pakistan, Rwanda, and Papua New Guinea.\r\n                                                        Their favorite destination is Togo, where\r\n                                                        they have served at Hopital Baptiste Biblique\r\n                                                        21 times.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Sam is a retired general surgeon. Liz's wide\r\n                                                        repertoire of talents includes everything\r\n                                                        except medical expertise. They have different\r\n                                                        niches but serve as a team.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cSo many professionals are centered on\r\n                                                        success,\u201d said Sam. \u201cThe whole premise of\r\n                                                        Samaritan's Purse and World Medical Mission\r\n                                                        is something we believe in, and that is doing\r\n                                                        something that matters. So, rather than success,\r\n                                                        we seek significance.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Adds Liz, \u201cFor me, it's as simple as God said\r\n                                                        go, and you do it. We are supposed to be out\r\n                                                        there making disciples. It's as simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>A decade ago they also began spending a few\r\n                                                        weeks in the summer providing care to our\r\n                                                        Operation Heal Our Patriots (OHOP) military\r\n                                                        couples at Samaritan Lodge in Alaska.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>When the pandemic prevented the couple\r\n                                                        from traveling to Togo in 2020, they turned\r\n                                                        their full attention to Alaska. That summer\r\n                                                        Samaritan's Purse scaled back the weekly\r\n                                                        program. Staying in operation required frequent\r\n                                                        COVID-19 testing of guests and staff.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Happy to volunteer, Sam was the COVID-19\r\n                                                        control officer who oversaw testing, while Liz\r\n                                                        made herself indispensable by assisting him as\r\n                                                        recordkeeper and lab organizer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <blockquote>\r\n                                                        <p><i>\u201cEven though Sam\r\n                                                                envisions his role going\r\n                                                                forward as more of a\r\n                                                                supportive role, he firmly\r\n                                                                believes that God still has\r\n                                                                plenty of work for him\r\n                                                                and Liz to do.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\r\n                                                    <\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>COVID-19 continued to be disruptive\r\n                                                        in 2022, and when the Williamses arrived at Samaritan Lodge that summer, the OHOP\r\n                                                        director, Mark Lang, was waiting for them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Lang asked Liz if she could assist in the\r\n                                                        kitchen, which was short-staffed because of\r\n                                                        the pandemic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Always \u201cjohnny on the spot,\u201d she was\r\n                                                        delighted to help. Sam and Liz also made a\r\n                                                        trip to Togo that year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>However, their circumstances shifted in\r\n                                                        2023. They put their travels on hold when Liz\r\n                                                        needed heart surgery, and Sam realized that\r\n                                                        the rigors of life and time were catching up\r\n                                                        with both of them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <figure>\r\n                                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sp-comm-arkfiles.s3.theark.cloud\/website\/on-call-article-pages\/spring-2024\/img\/OHOP-with-a-guide_S.jpg\"\r\n                                                            alt=\"Three smiling people pose for a photograph outdoors on a sunny day, with bystanders in the background.\">\r\n                                                        <figcaption><strong>The Williamses<\/strong> pose for a photo with one of the guides during their first assignment with\r\n                                                            Operation Heal Our Patriots at Samaritan Lodge in Alaska.<\/figcaption>\r\n                                                    <\/figure>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Reluctant to retire from missionary service,\r\n                                                        they sought God's direction and visited the\r\n                                                        World Medical Mission office in North\r\n                                                        Carolina to discuss options with the staff.\r\n                                                        They welcomed the prospects of mentoring\r\n                                                        young doctors at the mission hospitals and\r\n                                                        devoting more time to working with patients\r\n                                                        in the outpatient clinics and the wards.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cAn older, retired surgeon like me can offer\r\n                                                        wisdom and experience and be supportive\r\n                                                        in the clinic and on rounds and not be in\r\n                                                        the foreground anymore,\u201d said Sam. \u201cWe are\r\n                                                        happy to do that.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>The Williamses are looking forward to\r\n                                                        future assignments, both domestically and overseas. As of now, their 39th and 40th\r\n                                                        assignments will take place this summer in\r\n                                                        Alaska. They would also like to return to Togo, where they have made many friends and seen\r\n                                                        God's handiwork in the physical and spiritual\r\n                                                        lives of patients.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <blockquote>\r\n                                                     during his years of serving abroad as a short-\r\n                                                        term volunteer with World Medical Mission.\r\n                                                        One patient case that stands out in his\r\n                                                        memory was the remarkable metamorphosis\r\n                                                        of a young woman he operated on in Togo\r\n                                                        about 10 years                                               <\/div>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cShe came into the clinic with a hoodie\r\n                                                        on. And the hood was covering part of\r\n                                                        her face,\u201d he recalled. \u201cI saw the reason\r\n                                                        when she lifted the hood from her face\r\n                                                        and revealed a huge, deforming tumor that\r\n                                                        hung down over her eye.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cWhen we looked at her and caringly\r\n                                                        touched her face, she cried, because up to that\r\n                                                        point she had been shunned in her village.\r\n                                                        Her husband had abandoned her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Sam and a staff surgeon performed the\r\n                                                        operation, removing the mass which was\r\n                                                        later determined to be nonmalignant.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>He vividly remembers the patient's\r\n                                                        transformation when she came to the hospital for a follow-up exam. \u201cHer\r\n                                                        countenance glowed,\u201d he remarked. \u201cShe\r\n                                                        was smiling!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Such a dramatic difference took the seasoned\r\n                                                        surgeon by surprise. Even though she had scars\r\n                                                        that were healing, her outer and inner beauty\r\n                                                        shone\u2014probably for the first time in years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cI cried with joy,\u201d Sam said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>The staff shared the Gospel with the woman\r\n                                                        in her native language. Sam doesn't know what\r\n                                                        happened after she returned to her village, or\r\n                                                        how her heart and life may have changed,\r\n                                                        but patients like her inspire the physician to\r\n                                                        continue serving the Lord faithfully.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cI don't specifically recall if she accepted\r\n                                                        Christ, but I believe she did,\u201d he said. \u201cThis\r\n                                                        was a prime opportunity to make a radical\r\n                                                        transformation in a person's appearance, and to do it in the Name of Christ. And hers is just\r\n                                                        one example. It happens thousands of times.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n                                                    <figure>\r\n                                                        <img decoding=\"async\"                                                      strives for every day.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Liz tackles her tasks around the hospitals\r\n                                                        and mission compounds with equal fervor.\r\n                                                        Sometimes seemingly mundane actions are\r\n                                                        exactly what is needed to lighten the load for\r\n                                                        long-term missionary families.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>She described a few of her projects\r\n                                                        over the years\u2014baking cookies, pet sitting,\r\n                                                        lifeguarding, donating blood, cleaning surgical\r\n                                                        instruments, making curtains to create privacy\r\n                                                        in the wards, and gardening.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cIn Rwanda, I had brought my barn boots\r\n                                                        with me, and I worked along with the guys in\r\n                                                        the garden, which is totally out of character\r\n                                                        for a white woman to do there,\u201d recalled Liz.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    bare hands. And I weeded. They couldn't\r\n                                                        believe I would do that either.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Sam interjected, \u201cFor the most part, all I\r\n                                                        did was surgery. Liz did everything else. She\r\n                                                        did the real dirty work, literally.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>The couple did not have children, which\r\n                                                        they see as a blessing in disguise since they've\r\n                                                        had the flexibility to come and go and serve\r\n                                                        where needed. They especially like to relieve\r\n                                                        missionary doctors during the holidays so they can spend that precious time with their families.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Even though Sam envisions his role going\r\n                                                        forward as more of a supportive one, he\r\n                                                        firmly believes that God still has plenty of\r\n                                                        work for him and Liz to do.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cWe want to be as significant as we're able\r\n                                                        with whatever years remain for us,\u201d said Sam.\r\n                                                        \u201cThe older we get, the more we want to focus\r\n                                                        on the things that really matter.
