Operation Heal Our Patriots welcomed a new group of combat-wounded veterans and their spouses to Alaska each week for 16 weeks in 2016 to experience a time of Biblically based marriage enrichment.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Wounded service members and their spouses were flown to our wilderness lodge in Alaska where they went through a series of marriage classes, listened to daily devotions from God's Word, and were offered private Christ-focused counseling with our retired military chaplains. They also found physical refreshment by participating together in activities such as kayaking, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.<\/p>\r\n \r\n\t\t

\u201cFor real, long-term healing, wounded service members need a sound foundation,\" says retired Marine Brigadier General Jim Walker, who serves as the project's executive director. \"That foundation has two parts: a strong marriage and a strong faith in Christ. That\u2019s it. That\u2019s the whole program. That\u2019s what we\u2019re doing in Alaska.\u201d<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Samaritan\u2019s Purse started the Operation Heal Our Patriots project in 2012 to strengthen the marriages of military personnel wounded in combat or combat-related activities after 9\/11. The 2016 summer season ran from May 29 to September 16.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Our ministry to these couples does not end in Alaska as we follow up with them over the long term through our aftercare program. Our staff engages them through regular personal contact (phone calls, emails, social media, visits) and encourages their involvement with a local church. Many of the couples also now support each other directly. In addition, Operation Heal Our Patriots reunions and regional training events benefit couples by providing more Christian teaching and tools to enhance their marriage. <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n
