A Love Like None Other

A student at the Greta Home and Academy grows in her faith

Candace Parker is an intern at the Greta Home and Academy in Haiti.

Love Maillie is a spunky, beautiful, and bright 10-year-old young lady. Her joy radiates from her kind actions and dedication to learning English. She continuously speaks English with me and desires to learn and grow in her knowledge. Just today we were praying for countries together, and she stepped up to translate for me to the rest of the group! It’s a beautiful expression of God’s love to us.

Love Maillie has been here at the Greta Home since she was 6 years old and has grown by leaps and bounds in many ways. When asked when she first accepted Jesus into her life she replied, “at Greta Home,” and when asked how the Greta Home has helped her grow in knowing who Jesus is, she said, “When I am in my house [before GHA], I don’t know Jesus and I don’t know how to read the Bible. And at Greta Home I read my Bible!”

“Who is Jesus?” I asked her.

“Jesus is Jesus,” she graciously reminded me. “He is a gentle man; He is kindness, faithfulness, love, joy, peace, and patience. And He died for me on the cross and saved my life.”

This is such a simple truth that needs to be practiced in our everyday language. Love Maillie and I talked for a few more minutes. When I asked what her favorite verse was, she immediately remembered 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (NKJV).

Greta Home and Academy has the privilege of interacting daily with children who remind us of the simple Gospel. We are a family here, and family encourages one another. We disciple one another and love one another through our actions and words. Love Maillie loves to sing at the Greta Home and Academy, and so she and I finished our chat by singing her favorite song, “Shout to the Lord.” It was such a beautiful moment to be reminded that, “Lord, there is none like you. All of my days, I want to praise the wonders of your mighty love.”
