Heavy rains caused the Guadalupe River to flood suddenly on Friday, July 4, claiming at least 46 lives. A number of people remain unaccounted for; among them are those from a Christian girls camp in Hunt, Texas, where 6.5 inches of rain fell in a three-hour period.
Intense search-and-rescue efforts remain underway. Hundreds have been plucked from the waters so far, including many saved by helicopter over the past two days.
Both the San Angelo area of Tom Green County and the Kerrville area of Kerr County have been hit hard. Most deaths occurred in Kerr County. The mayor of Kerrville, Joe Herring, said the river rose 26 feet in 45 minutes early on Friday morning.
Samaritan’s Purse North American Ministries staffers are on the ground today in central Texas.
“Pray for those who have lost or missing loved ones and for first responders and rescue teams working to save lives,” said Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham via Facebook.
