Samaritan’s Purse has deployed a Disaster Relief Unit to Sarasota, Florida, and volunteer teams are hard at work in Savannah, Georgia, to help homeowners recover.
Hurricane Debby unleashed heavy rains and winds from Aug. 4-8, initially landing as a Category 1 hurricane in northern Florida and making its way up the East Coast as an intense tropical storm. Debby dumped historic amounts of precipitation, leading to widespread flooding that killed eight people.
In response, Samaritan’s Purse has deployed to Savannah, Georgia, and we are en route to Sarasota, Florida, to help hurting homeowners in Jesus’ Name. Both cities saw destruction brought on by torrential rainfall and flash flooding. Hundreds of families are reeling in Debby’s aftermath.
Volunteer teams—supported by a Disaster Relief Unit (DRU) filled with relief supplies and equipment—recently began work helping homeowners with debris cleanup and mud-outs in the Peach State, where 10 inches of rain breached dams in the Savannah area. Our host church is Compassion Christian Church at 55 Al Henderson Blvd.
Another DRU is on its way to Sarasota where we will be receiving volunteers as soon as Aug. 17. The city felt the full force of Debby coming off the Gulf of Mexico, with whipping winds and strong storm surges. Our host church in the Sunshine State will be Bedrock Church at 2035 Magnolia Street.
Samaritan’s Purse volunteers will assist homeowners in their time of need all the while sharing the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Billy Graham Rapid Response Team chaplains will also be serving at both locations.
Please pray for all the families impacted by this storm. Pray for our staff and volunteers as they work in the region.
Samaritan’s Purse continues to provide relief to homeowners impacted by Hurricane Beryl in southeast Texas and flood victims in Iowa. Sign up to volunteer at one of our responses today and help hurting homeowners in Jesus’ Name.
