A graduate of the Greta Home and Academy continues to develop his musical talents for God's glory.
Moise dreamed of learning how to play the piano. But that vision seemed unlikely to be fulfilled as the Haitian boy grew up in extreme poverty.
He lived with 10 family members in a two-room shack with no plumbing, electricity, or running water. They slept on the bare floor and sometimes went days without food. Moise couldn’t attend school.
“I always prayed and hoped God would change my life,” he said.
Moise came to live at what would become Greta Home and Academy at age 13. He thanked God for the comforts of a bed, pillow, and hot meals. He also loved hearing the music during worship services where he saw a piano keyboard up close for the first time.
It was at a local church worship service that Moise gave his heart to the Lord about two years after coming under the care of Samaritan’s Purse.
Established in Léogâne, Haiti, in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, the Greta Home and Academy provides a Christian environment for orphaned and vulnerable children to receive an education and spiritual foundation rooted in Jesus Christ through discipleship courses and worship services.
A Song in His Heart
One summer, a volunteer at the Greta Home noticed Moise’s interest in music. A pianist, she taught him keyboard basics.
Seeing how much Moise wanted to play the piano, our Greta Home and Academy staff arranged for him to take music lessons on a regular basis. He began leading music at worship services, playing the keyboard and singing with a musical group he formed with fellow students.
Now a graduate of the Greta Academy, 21-year-old Moise currently resides in our independent living program house. He is just the second person in his family out of three generations to finish high school. He still leads music for special events at Greta Home as well as during local church worship services.
Moise travels by bus from Léogâne to Port-au-Prince to attend a music school in the capital city. He also is preparing to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) so he can study music abroad.
“I’m always eager to go to music class,” Moise said. “I hope that my music changes people’s lives and brings people to Christ.”
The Greta Home and Academy encourages the boys and girls in its care to become Christian leaders who share the joy and hope of the Gospel with others. Pray that these young people will continue to grow and encourage each other in their faith.
