Chaka's life dramatically changed when her vision deteriorated and everything began looking like smoke.
She could no longer enjoy cooking, which was her favorite thing to do. Chaka was also unable to collect wood from the forest to sell as firewood, and without a job or income, she had to rely on family and neighbors for food.
Chaka lives in a remote, impoverished village in South Sudan and didn't know where to turn for help in restoring her sight.
She was overjoyed to hear about and, ultimately, to receive a life-changing operation from a Samaritan's Purse cataract surgical team. Samaritan's Purse is sending volunteer teams on short-term trips around the world to provide cataract surgeries for both children and adults who have no access to these transformative procedures. We've done this work in countries including South Sudan, Liberia, and Mexico.
We need medical volunteers who have a heart for sharing the love of Jesus Christ with those who are hurting and in desperate need. Volunteers should be flexible, committed to doing whatever necessary to serve the team, and able to work in a fast-paced environment with limited resources. Previous international experience is required. Volunteers should also be willing to secure the appropriate international travel documents and immunizations.
We are looking for volunteers in these specialties (all required licensures should be current):
- Cataract surgeons
(with experience in manual small incision cataract surgery) - Optometrists
- Ophthalmology nurses
- Perioperative nurses
(Pre-op, PACU, OR) - Certified Ophthalmic Technicians
- Ophthalmic Surgical Assistants
