Dorothy Rogers Bramlitt Howett passed away at the age of 96 on Oct. 15, 2020. She was the youngest of three daughters born to John William Bramlitt and Helen Seibel Bramlitt on June 15, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia. The family moved to Miami, Florida, in 1926.
Dorothy (Dot) was preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Norman H. Howett (1976); her sisters, Martha Walker (1982) and Kathryn Young (2011); and an infant granddaughter, Lindsey Howett (1987).
Dorothy is survived by her four children: Norma Kingsbery (Harry) of Manassas, Virginia; Shirley Wiley (Roy) of Brandon, Florida; Edward Howett (Julia) of Miami, Florida; Douglas Howett (Karen) of Brooks , Georgia; 12 grandchildren and l4 great-grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews.
Dorothy attended Coral Gables Elementary School and was a 1941 honor graduate of Miami Senior High School. Her first employment was at The Retail Credit Company from 1940-1946. She held the position of ministerial secretary at the First Christian Church of Miami from 1960 until 1976. Then Dot began working for Dade County Public Schools in attendance services from 1976 until her retirement as administrative secretary for the superintendent of the department in 1996.
Dorothy was always involved in the life of the church, having been raised in the First Christian Church of Miami (Disciples of Christ). She and Norman met and were married at the church. Dot served in many leadership capacities as a youth and adult, including president of the Christian Youth Fellowship, President of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, chairperson of the Church Board , deaconess, and elder. She served on the national board of directors of the Christian Church Foundation from 1978 through 1990 and on the board of directors of the Florida Christian Center in Jacksonville, Florida, from 1980 through 1995, serving as president of the board of directors for two years. The Center was an assisted living facility with over 700 residents and clients and a 128-bed health center.
Dot always enjoyed the opportunity to travel whether it was on cruises and overseas adventures with her sister, attending out of town church functions, or visiting family and attending celebrations with family and friends.
Dorothy had been a resident of The Palace Gardens assisted living facility in the Memory Care unit since April 2018. The family is so thankful for the love and care that she received from the staff at the Palace. Opus Hospice provided continuous care for her the past few months.
The immediate family is having a memorial service at Van Orsdel Kendall, with burial at Woodlawn Park South Cemetery on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
