Jim Vimont - Kearney, NE

James “Jim” W. Vimont, 73, of Kearney, Nebraska, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2024, at CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Jim was born on June 27, 1950, in Seattle, Washington, to John and Miriam (Gibson) Vimont.

He attended Tuscola High School in Waynesville, North Carolina, and graduated with the class of 1969. Jim served his country as a member of the United States Army. He later attended and graduated from Greenville College in Illinois. He married Twyla M. Johnson on August 11, 1979, in Fountain, Colorado.

Jim worked for the former Immigration and Naturalization Service for 22 years, relocating to numerous states throughout his career. He was a dedicated husband, father, and church member. Jim and Twyla lived in Yakima, Washington, for 20 years before moving to Kearney in 2021, when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma cancer. Jim fought for almost 3 years, beating the odds, and modeling deep faith and a grateful attitude. He was a member of the Kearney E-Free Church where he continued his dedication to serving.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Twyla Vimont of Kearney; children, Heather (Josh) Carlson of Washington, Miriam (Jonathan) Nikkila of Kearney, Nathanael (Ann) Vimont of California, Christian (Michaela) Vimont of Washington; and 12 grandchildren. Also his brothers, Burt (Cindy) Vimont, Delmer (Charlene) Vimont, and Paul (Elaine) Vimont.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Miriam; sister, Janice; sister, Mary; and brother, John.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the Kearney E-Free Church with Pastor John Fowler officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, Nebraska, with military rites provided by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team and the North Platte Veterans Group.
