Matthew Robert Stevenson, 22, of Wildwood, MO, left this world suddenly on August 18, 2020, as the result of a tragic accident. He was born on August 30, 1997, in Wildwood, the son of Randall and Kelly (Frentzel) Stevenson.
He attended St. John’s Lutheran school, and then graduated Lafayette Senior High. He was beginning his senior year toward an Engineering Management degree at Missouri S&T in Rolla. He was a member at Pathfinder Church (formerly St. John’s Lutheran Church) in Ellisville, MO, where he was confirmed. Matthew was active in Boy Scouting and had achieved his Eagle rank.
Matt had a kind and compassionate heart and genuinely cared for the well-being of others. He was the guy who stopped to help a mother and daughter with a flat tire on his way to a job interview, served in a soup kitchen in his high school years, and would pass a couple bucks to someone down on their luck. He was always there for his friends, day or night, routinely taking the role as ‘designated driver’ to keep his friends safe. He was an ever-present shoulder to lean on.
Matt was young at heart but had much wisdom. He appreciated old music as much as new music. He still enjoyed Mario Bros. but rode a loud Harley. He always wore his seat belt but was caught doing nearly 100 mph on Hwy 40, just because it was a beautiful day and his car was running well. He loved just hanging out with friends in the present but had his future planned out in detail. He was self-confident and held strong convictions but gave thoughtful consideration to the opinions of others. Even in the current culture, he had the courage to share his Christian faith with friends and support them during difficult times. He cared about their future in this life and the next. He was not into drugs or cigarettes but opted for an occasional cigar. And he liked ginger beer as much as craft beer and Fitz root beer as much as a nice Cab.
Matt had a unique and wonderful wit and appreciated the humor in the classics as much as he did that of Monty Python, Polandball, and bands like Ludo. He always wanted to road-trip to Lake Pontchartrain, just because it was in the song.
Matt was truly a one-of-a-kind friend, son, brother, grandson, and uncle.
Matthew is survived by his parents, Randall and Kelly Stevenson, of Wildwood; his sister and brother-in-law, Robin (Stevenson) and Phillip Castaneda; maternal grandparents, Arnold and Carol Frentzel, of Ballwin, MO; his niece and nephew; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, September 19, between noon and 3:00 p.m. at The Old Barn Inn at St. Albans. The service will begin at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Samaritan’s Purse, where this memorial page has been established in Matt’s name. All donations made through this memorial page will be designated to care for orphaned children in war-torn regions – a cause for which Matthew has cared deeply for many years.
