In Memory Of
Merlyn Calvert - Spokane, WA

Merlyn Albert Calvert, 83, of Spokane, WA, went home to his Lord Jesus on Jan. 25. He was surrounded by family after experiencing an unexpected heart attack from which he never awoke.

Merlyn attended Lewis and Clark High School, along with Dottie Calvert, whom he married in 1955. After working diligently at any job that would provide for his family, he became employed at National Music Service, eventually becoming Vice President of Sales. Several years later Merlyn served as Vice President of Teledynamics, a telecommunications company he helped start. During his retirement he enjoyed driving a school bus, leading a Bible study at the Airway Heights Correctional facility, serving on his church elder board, and selling Medicare insurance.

Merlyn said that the greatest decision of his life was putting his faith in Jesus Christ. That commitment resulted in a lifetime of service to Jesus and others. This included playing trumpet, leading singing, serving on committees, and passionately supporting world missions. He also personally invested in many men to help them in their personal and spiritual growth.

He deeply loved his family, and carefully and lovingly cared for his wife. He also intentionally stayed involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He modeled integrity, generosity, wisdom, and service. He was always there for them. Along the way he passed on his ready sense of humor, love for travel, joy of driving, and adventure.

Merlyn is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dottie Calvert, as well as children Connie (Dan) McLaughlin and Chris (Michele) Calvert; six grandchildren: Ben, Peter, and Chris McLaughlin, and Charis, Cadence, and Connor Calvert. He also loved and considered Abby, Ellie, Emily, and Peter Mikiska as additional grandchildren. Merlyn leaves his sister, Carrie Brown, and a brother, Maylon Anderson, plus many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughters, Kimmy Lee Calvert, age 11 (1968), Kiersti Ann Calvert, stillborn (1962), and Carrie Christine Calvert, stillborn (1969).

Merlyn’s memorial service will be live-streamed on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 1:00 p.m. from Fourth Memorial Church of Spokane. Because of Covid, a limited amount of people will be able to attend in person. Opportunity for people to sign-up to attend in person will be made available on Merlyn Calvert’s CaringBridge webpage.
