It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sherman D. Smith, on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at the age of 83.
Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marlene (Jourdan); his daughter, Julie; his son, Charles (Lynnette); his three grandchildren, Zachary, Amanda, and Noah; and his brother, Sterling Smith. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Melburn Smith; his mother, Ethel Pearl (Scobey) Smith; his brother, Vernon Smith; and his sister, Lillas Boudreau.
Sherman was born on February 22, 1941, in Somerville, Massachusetts, and spent his formative years in Somerville and Braintree, Massachusetts. He earned an associate’s degree in machine and manufacturing from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He provided 42 years of faithful service as a senior technician at Argonne National Laboratory. Sherman enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1963, receiving his naval training at Great Lakes Naval Station. He was in active-duty service from 1964-1967 as a communications technician stationed at the U.S. Navy Naval Communications Station in Honolulu, HIawaii He served his country honorably and was a proud U.S. Navy veteran throughout his life.
Sherman met his wife, Marlene, in 1962, They were married on March 6, 1965. Sherman was a devoted and loving husband during his 59-year marriage to Marlene. Sherman and Marlene purchased their first home in Broadview, Illinois, where they raised their children,Julie and Charlie. He was a loving father who enjoyed spending time with his children, taking an active interest in their hobbies and interests, and taking them on special outings.
As his children matured, he enjoyed celebrating the important events in their lives and their accomplishments. He welcomed his daughter-in-law, Lynnette, into the family and he took great joy in his three grandchildren, Zachary, Amanda, and Noah, as they grew from young children into adults. Sherman and Marlene moved to their current home in Elgin in their later years. He took great pleasure in going to senior water aerobics, walking, and going to movies with Marlene. His greatest joy and comfort in life was his relationship with his loving wife and companion, Marlene.
Sherman was an active member of Hosanna Lutheran Church in St. Charles, Illinois. Sherman’s religious faith was very important to him, and he loved reading the Bible and daily devotions.
