We airlifted emergency relief supplies to those suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew
Hurricane Matthew, a Category 3 storm when it slammed into the Bahamas on Thursday, October 6, has left thousands of people on the islands without power and in need of emergency relief aid. The devastating storm killed hundreds and caused catastrophic damage throughout the Caribbean region.
Samaritan’s Purse sent an airlift with 20 tons of water filters, heavy-duty plastic sheeting, hygiene kits, and blankets to help people in hurricane-affected areas of the Bahamas. An initial four-member Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) was also aboard our DC-8 and will join local church partners in distributing relief supplies. The 20 tons of supplies will reach 1,500 households.
Matthew plowed through Nassau, making it the first major hurricane to hit the capital city in nearly 100 years. The hurricane battered the nation with wind gusts of up to 140 mph.
Today’s airlift is our third flight to the Caribbean. We’ve already sent a total of 40 tons of relief supplies to Haiti via two flights.
