Congressional Delegation Visits Emergency Field Hospital in the Bahamas

Members of the U.S. Congress and USAID representatives meet with our teams in Freeport.

Samaritan’s Purse continues serving hurting families one month after Hurricane Dorian’s devastating strike on the Bahamas. Our mobile Emergency Field Hospital in Freeport on Grand Bahama remains up and running as our team of medical specialists provides quality care for patients in desperate need.

We have seen more than 2,700 patients since the hospital opened on Sept. 10.

On Oct. 1, Mark Green, USAID Administrator, and members of the U.S. Congress toured the hospital facilities. Congressional representatives included Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Mario Diaz-Balart, Gregory Meeks, and Frederica Wilson.

“There is no more trusted partner than Samaritan’s Purse,” Green said. “I’ve seen their work in so many parts of the world—it’s fantastic. Everywhere I’ve seen Samaritan’s Purse I have seen a level of sophistication. Samaritan’s Purse delivers.”

Our 40-bed facility, which we airlifted at the request of the World Health Organization and the Bahamas government, includes an outpatient department and emergency room that is equipped to serve more than 100 patients a day. Our operating room has the capacity for 10 surgeries per day.

Green said seeing the medical team’s dedication was the most remarkable aspect of his visit.

“There was a sense of purpose in the eyes of the team,” he said. “It was hot and there was a ton of work and lots of patients, but their sense of purpose is something you can’t make up.”

In addition to our medical response, our disaster assistance response team continues distributing relief items on Freeport and the hard-hit Abaco Islands. Our DC-8 cargo plane has made 15 trips to the Bahamas, transporting nearly 300 tons of critically needed emergency supplies for the people of the islands.

We are providing heavy-duty shelter material, hygiene kits, kitchen kits, generators, blankets, jerry cans, and solar lights. We have also supplied more than 215,000 liters of clean water.

Volunteers will soon begin working on Man-O-War Cay, one of the hardest-hit areas on the Abacos Islands. Volunteers will be tarping roofs, clearing debris, and doing mud-outs at flooded homes. Sign up to volunteer.

Samaritan’s Purse has deployed more than 130 staff members to the Bahamas. Please continue to pray for the people of the Bahamas and for our teams.
