Through our agriculture projects in Bolivia, Samaritan’s Purse is helping farmers earn an income for their families without needing to travel far from home.
Grown in the high altitudes and warm climates of South America, goldenberries are small, round fruits that can taste either tart or sweet. Learning how to plant and harvest these husk-encased yellow berries in the mountains of Bolivia has made the difference between husbands and fathers needing to seek out work far from home to enabling them to tend and sell crops locally.
Participants in the farming cooperative we established in Chuma, Bolivia, package locally grown peppers and goldenberries to sell in community markets.
Through our agricultural projects in Bolivia, Samaritan’s Purse staff there teach farmers how to plant and harvest goldenberries as well as other fruits and vegetables. We give them starter seedlings and check on their progress through follow-up visits.
All along the way, we share the Gospel with the farmers and their families—praying with and for them.
Samaritan’s Purse arrived in Bolivia in 2007 when we responded to severe flooding in the country’s eastern lowlands. Since then, we have implemented a wide range of programs, such as maternal and child health, violence prevention training, school feeding projects, after-school tutoring, livelihood skills development, and cleft lip/palate repair.
Additional ministries in Bolivia include WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), Children’s Heart Project, the Ruth Bell Boat Clinic, Operation Christmas Child, and The Greatest Journey.
