Helping Others in Old Age

An elderly woman in Vietnam shares the knowledge she learned from Samaritan’s Purse

Le Thi Hop works with Samaritan’s Purse in Vietnam.

Mrs. Oanh is an elderly woman who wants “to improve her knowledge to help others better.” She has the heart to help people, especially her husband, three children, and six grandchildren, learn healthy ways of living.

Mrs. Oanh and her husband live with one of their sons. She said her husband used to drink a lot of beer. After he got drunk, he would sometimes say hurtful things about his family members. Mrs. Oanh had difficulty dealing with those situations.

Mrs. Oanh with her family

Through attending the Samaritan’s Purse parenting skills training, she now knows how to handle situations better. She explained to her husband that he needs to be careful with his words to be respected by his wife, children, and grandchildren. At the same time, she loves and cares for him more.

She was willing to set a good example in loving and serving her family. She became more patient with them, forgave them easily, had fun, and lived in harmony with them to create a peaceful atmosphere.

She often talked to her husband after dinner and asked for his opinions on different situations. She always showed respect to him no matter what his opinions were, and after seeing her changed behavior, her husband changed also. Mrs. Oanh also advised her daughter-in-law to treat her husband with unconditional love.

I’m happy to see the changes in Mrs. Oanh. She has grasped the skills to become a gentle wife, mother, and grandmother. I encouraged her to impart those skills to her neighbors.

“Of course I will share with them,” she said. “You know I learn to help others.”

I would like to thank Samaritan’s Purse for helping people in old age. Many of these people are full of love, gentleness, and kindness who are willing to help others.
