Kathryn Steis Pace, 84, passed away June 19, 2023, in Roswell, Georgia, after battling several health issues. In the last 15 years, she had survived a brain aneurysm, lung cancer, skin cancer, and multiple broken bones.
Kathryn was born on October 14, 1938, in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, to Burton and Helen Steis. She grew up in Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia, with one sister, Marjorie.
After growing up Catholic, Kathryn converted to the Baptist faith when she married James M. Pace, Jr. She and James were married for 27 years and had four daughters, Sharon, Susan, Linda, and Emily.
Kathryn graduated from the University of Georgia and taught school for 12 years. She also worked for Family and Children Services in Mitchell County, Georgia, for 8 years and co-owned Roswell Florist with her daughter Linda Pace for 5 years.
Kathryn moved to Roswell, Georgia, in 1998 and joined the First Baptist Church of Roswell, where she was a member of the Chancel Choir and was active in Sunday School and Women on Mission. She found great joy in reading and studying God’s Word and in praying for others, especially missionaries. She sewed pillowcase dresses for children in Kenya, made “plarn” for mats for the homeless, and assembled shoe boxes each year for the Operation Christmas Child program of Samaritan’s Purse.
Over the years, Kathryn enjoyed dancing, reading, and watching Westerns. In her later years, she spent her time singing, reading, and doing puzzles: crossword, Sudoku, and jigsaw. She was an avid fan of the University of Georgia bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves. Kathryn was extremely smart and had an incredible memory. Her daughters referred to her as the “steel trap,” since they could always count on her to remember anything.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Proudfoot and husband Harry of Brunswick, Georgia, Susan Foster and husband Brian of Marietta, Georgia, Linda Pace of Marietta, Georgia, and Emily McCoy and husband Mark of Athens, Georgia. She is also survived by her two granddaughters, Abby Foster and Samantha Foster of Marietta, Georgia; and her sister, Marjorie Bowling of LaGrange, Georgia.
Kathryn’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service at the chapel of First Baptist Church, Roswell, Georgia, on Saturday, July 8, at 1:00 P.M. The family will receive friends before the service at 12:00 P.M.
