In Memory Of
Mary M. Garnett - Jacksonville, FL

"A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” – Proverbs 31:30b-31 (NIV)

Mary Morgan Garnett, 91, passed away on May 14, 2022. She was born on Jan. 11, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to John L. and Ruth A. Morgan.

At the age of 3, the family moved to Jacksonville, where Mary would become a proud graduate of Andrew Jackson High School. She worked as a secretary for Dunn & Bradstreet and N.A.S. Jacksonville. While working at the naval station, she attended a dance, where she met a young naval serviceman named Bill Garnett. They were married in August 1956, and would spend 53 years together. They spent the first part of their marriage living in Blacksburg, Virginia, and then Decatur, Georgia, before moving to Mandarin in 1959. Throughout their married life, they enjoyed both ballroom and square dancing (members of the “Mandarin Allemanders”) and family camping. Her personal hobbies included ceramics, following U.F. and Jaguar football, and participating in Bible Study Fellowship.

Bill and Mary were longtime members of Mandarin Presbyterian Church, and both were involved in church leadership. Mary was active in the Girl Scouts while her daughter, Elizabeth, was growing up, serving as a troop leader. After her children were grown, she returned to the workplace where she was employed by American Bank, followed by Abba Construction.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2010. Survivors include John Garnett (Tevis) and Elizabeth Garnett, both living in Savannah, Georgia. Mary has four grandchildren, Wesley Garnett (Allison) of Birmingham, Alabama; Rachel Carpenter (Jay) of Savannah, Georgia; Tim Garnett (Savannah) of LaGrange, Georgia; and Grace Garnett of Savannah, Georgia. She has four great-grandchildren, Gracie, Jack, Sammy, and Billy.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Hardage-Giddens-Mandarin Chapel, with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m.
