Yolanda Graciela Vela Wintill, born on April 26, 1948, in Brownsville, Texas, to Salvador and Lucila Vela, peacefully went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 9, 2023. A devoted wife, mother, and teacher of her faith, Yolanda's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to Christ.
Growing up in Brownsville, she came to know Jesus at 8 years old. She served in her church as a pianist, Sunday school teacher, and Vacation Bible School leader. As the oldest grandchild, she had fond memories of taking her siblings and cousins to Bible church. Yolanda's journey then led her to Houston, where she graduated from the University of Houston. It was there that she crossed paths with Charles Wintill, her husband of 54 years, with whom she shared a life of love and companionship. Yolanda continued teaching Sunday school and serving as a translator on mission trips to Mexico with her family and local church. Later, she enjoyed going with some grandchildren to Costa Rica, helping with Vacation Bible School and door-to-door evangelism.
As a gifted teacher, Yolanda used her gifts beyond math and Spanish to teach others about the Bible and the love of Jesus Christ. She shared freely how sin separated us from God, and that the only way to obtain salvation is through Jesus Christ, our mediator. As we remember Yolanda, she deeply desired for all to know Jesus Christ as their Savior, to delve into the Bible, and live a life set apart for God’s purpose for each one of them.
As we bid farewell to Yolanda Graciela Vela Wintill, let us remember the impact she made on those fortunate enough to know her personally and may her memory continue to inspire us all to grow deeply in our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
