As Africa’s oldest republic, Liberia was initially established on land that was purchased for slaves freed from the United States. More recently, it is known for its rainforest and a season of civil war in the 1990s. Samaritan’s Purse began hosting Operation Christmas Child outreach events for the nation’s children in 1998 and launched The Greatest Journey discipleship program here in 2012. Samaritan’s Purse has a long history of ministering to the physical health of the country as well, most notably, treating the Ebola outbreak from 2014 into 2016.

A ministry partner writes, “We want to thank all those who are packing shoeboxes. We went to a very remote village, one where they haven’t heard the Gospel in over 100 years. In that village was one of the oldest men in Liberia at 118 years old.” For the first time in his life, this man saw a gift being given without any strings attached. The children freely got the boxes and no child was asked to pay. “There were many children in that village that gave their lives to Christ,” said the ministry partner. “As a result of the outreach event, the man gave 30 acres of land for a church.”
