Where can I find current volunteer opportunities?

You can find our list of volunteer opportunities on the World Medical Mission - Where to Serve page.

How long are volunteer service assignments?

Short-term service assignments range from a two-week minimum to a one-year maximum. A four-months advanced notice on all assignments is preferred.

Do I have to be a Christian to volunteer?

The primary mission of Samaritan's Purse is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and we seek volunteers who have the same ministry heart and values. We ask that volunteers review our Statement of Faith and Practice found in the online application and agree to support the ministry guidelines of Samaritan's Purse.

How does the volunteer application process work?

The application process includes the submission of an online application, two professional references, one character reference, and a CV. After the application has been reviewed, someone on our team will contact the volunteer regarding the status of their application. The initial approval comes from World Medical Mission and the secondary and final approval comes from the mission hospital or clinic where the volunteer will be serving.

Do I have to undergo a background check to volunteer?

Yes. Our volunteer application will ask for information to complete this process, and the information you provide is sent through a secure server directly to Accurate Background, our background check provider. There is no cost to the volunteer and all information is kept confidential.

What are the medical provider qualifications?

Providers must have an active, valid medical or nursing license or certification, and be in good standing with their respective licensing board.

Are these volunteer assignments for individuals or groups?

While the majority are individual service assignments, we do have opportunities for small medical and dental specialty teams as well.

Can medical and dental students or residents volunteer?

Yes, electives and rotations are available for medical students in their fourth/final year, residents at the end of their second year and beyond, and dental students during any year.

Why volunteer through World Medical Mission?

Our volunteer coordinators are able to match your interests and skill set to the mission hospital’s needs. We provide orientation and preparation materials and other resources. As a medical professional, how is malpractice insurance covered?

Medical malpractice insurance is provided by Samaritan's Purse for all medical professionals. More information will be provided to medical professional volunteers upon approval of application.

Can non-medical family members volunteer?

Yes, non-medical spouses and children are able to join and volunteer in a non-medical capacity.

How much does a mission trip cost?

We provide a budget worksheet for each location outlining all of the trip-related expenses. These expenses may be considered tax-deductible. Medical volunteers can apply for the Flight Benefit Program to have the cost of their economy direct route airfare covered by World Medical Mission. Volunteers also have the option to raise financial support through World Medical Mission.
