Families in Japan are still struggling to recover weeks after a powerful typhoon hit Tokyo and areas southwest of the capital. Typhoon Hagibis killed nearly 100 people and displaced thousands due to flooding.

Samaritan’s Purse is working with local partners to help bring much needed relief to storm victims. Our partners are organizing volunteer teams to meet with homeowners and do mud-outs, removing waterlogged belongings from flooded homes. Teams are also helping with roof repair and tarping.

Masako met a volunteer team a few days after the storm. She had lived in her home for more than 50 years and this was the first time it flooded. Masako and her father, who is disabled, had to spend the night in the second floor of their home because the first floor was flooded.

Masako is grateful for the help she received.

The next morning, a thick layer of mud covered the rooms in Masako’s home. Her car was destroyed and so was her garden. Masako needed help, but her entire community was in the same situation.

Masako connected with one of our partners organizing volunteer mud-out teams. The team helped clean her home and prayed with her before they left. Masako was overwhelmed by the team’s compassion.

“We will continue to reach out to communities and bring the hope of God,” said David Kazama, director of Hope Wind, one of our partners. “God is sending us to show His love through our volunteer work.”

Please pray for hurting families in Japan. Pray that they will experience God’s love during this desperate time.

Samaritan’s Purse responded in Japan in 2011 when the country was hit with a nuclear disaster, earthquake, and resulting tsunami. Since that time, we have come alongside local churches to provide training in disaster relief response.
