AIC Litein Hospital provides primary and specialist care to a population of approximately 800,000 people across six counties in the South Rift region of Kenya. The hospital has 220 beds and a 10-bed casualty unit or emergency room. The community of about 600 medical and nonmedical staff is rich in spirit and passionate about providing quality medical care. General outpatient services are provided by qualified specialists in order to meet the needs of the patients and face the challenges of providing healthcare services on a 24/7 timeline. Approximately 400 patients are served every day. On average 600 patients are admitted every month. Bed occupancy is over 80 percent. The surgery department carries out close to 180 operations per month, 30-40 percent being minor operations. Ophthalmic surgery and orthopedic surgery including knee and hip replacements are also available. The hospital is a Medical and Clinical Officers’ Internship Centre and the associated AIC Medical Training College trains nurses and a variety of medical technical specialists. The hospital sponsors a Family Medicine residency and a Pan Africa Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) residency program which recently graduated the first two surgeons trained by an all Kenyan faculty.

The hospital is located about 270 kilometers from Nairobi at 6300 ft. elevation. It is 40 km from Kericho County headquarters and about a 45 minute drive Tenwek Mission Hospital.

The Kalenjin ethnolinguistic group is the predominant people group living in the Litein area, but other groups and nationalities are present in the minority including students and medical residents.

Swahili and English are the official languages of Kenya, but local tribal dialects are widely spoken, with Kipsigis being the predominant dialect of the Litein area. All medical staff speak English and medical records are written in English.

The population is primarily Christian (Protestant and Catholic), though more remote tribes may practice animism and spirit worship and there is some syncretistic practice even among Christians. Muslim and Hindus comprise a smaller portion of the religious community.

The temperature in Litein is moderate due to the altitude, with temperatures ranging from 55 – 85 F and mostly in the 60s and 70s depending on season and time of day. There are two rainy seasons March – June and October – December when it can rain heavily several hours to much of the day, though in all except the dry and hotter season of December – March, one can expect rain most days.
Housing/Meals
Short-term medical personnel will be housed in one of a variety of guest houses in a compound a short walk from the hospital. Houses are completely furnished including well-equipped kitchens. Groceries are readily available in town, a short walk from the hospital. Guests may also eat at the hospital restaurant or one of several local restaurants which offer typical Kenyan food at very reasonable cost.
