Haiti

Haiti is located in the Caribbean Sea on the western part of Hispaniola, the island it shares with the Dominican Republic. This historically poor nation has suffered much from disasters including a major earthquake that struck near its capital Port-au-Prince in 2010. Samaritan’s Purse began delivering Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts to children here in 1996. We have also offered The Greatest Journey, our follow-up discipleship program for shoebox recipients, to Haitian boys and girls since 2009.

A 14-year-old boy named Jean* was so troubled that it was difficult for him to attend school or church. His mother did not know how to help him, so she contacted voodoo priests in search of answers. But even after trying 19 of them, no help could be found for Jean. One of our Operation Christmas Child ministry partners, a local pastor, learned of her struggle and proposed a better solution: “Let us try Jesus now, because I believe that God is able to heal the boy.”

The pastor asked other believers in Haiti to pray and fast for Jean. He also invited the boy to attend the 12 lessons of The Greatest Journey discipleship program, and in time, God brought Jean peace. During the third lesson, while studying John 3:16, he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior! Jean went on to graduate and began teaching other children the Good News through his student booklet. Jean thanks God for how He used The Greatest Journey to introduce Him to the Bible and ultimately to Jesus. He says he would still be lost if not for this outreach. And the Lord used his testimony to bring Jean’s mother and three siblings to Christ!

Pray for Your Shoebox Recipient

“Whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”—Matthew 21:22

Please don’t stop praying for the boy or girl that you first lifted up when you packed your shoebox. Continue to ask God to soften his or her heart to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, so that he or she will follow Him all the days of their life. Pray also for families and entire communities to be transformed as God’s love is shared through your simple gift.

The Greatest Journey

Taught by trained local teachers, this 12-lesson discipleship program shows children how to follow Christ and share Him with others. As boys and girls share the Scripture stories they learn in class, their friends and family come to faith—growing churches, starting new congregations, and transforming communities by the power of the Gospel.
